Trekking in the Cusco Region
Trek: THE INKA TRAIL (4 days, 3 nights)
Highest Altitude: 4198 meter
Difficult: moderate
Description:
South America's most famous trek. The trail end is at "KM 82", follows an old Inca trail
with several important Inca ruins and ends at the site of Machu Picchu. From there we take the
bus to Agua Calientes (who feels like walking more: 1 hour downhill walking) and from there
the train back to Cusco.
(Km 82 - Llulluchupampa - Pacamayo - Phuyupatamarca - Machu Picchu)
Reservations:
Due to a very high number of visitors the amount of people entering the trail is now limited
to 500 per day (still very high: impossible to avoid the hand-in-hand walking feeling).
In the high season therefor, reservations have to be made at least 6 weeks in advance to
assure your place. In the low season reservations may be made up until 2 weeks before starting
the trek.
It is not allowed to hike the Inca Trail without official guidance.
Trek: Inca Trail Alternative: Mollepata to Machu Picchu (5 days, 4 nights)
Highest Altitude: 4700 meter
Difficult: moderate
This trail runs higher and closer to the snow-covered mountains and is not so highly frequented as
the Inca Trail itself. There are hardly any tourists here and you'll have a lot more contact to
the locals and rural villages. There are no ruins on the trail but obviously we visit Machu Picchu
after finishing the trek. Many people prefer this trek to get away from the crowds on the
Inca Trail, especially those who don't necessarily need to see all Inca ruins.
(Mollepata - Cruz Pata - Soraypampa - Huayracpunko - Colcapampa - La Playa - Llactapata - Machu Picchu)
Trek: Choquequirao ("newly discovered Machu Picchu") & Machu Picchu (8 days, 7 nights)
Highest Altitude: 4700 meter
Difficult: difficult
The Choquequirao ruins are a fairly bit smaller than Machu Picchu but also in a spectacular location and
so far(!) hardly visited. From Choquequirao we continue the trek to Machu Picchu itself.
(Cachora - Cerro Rumihuasi - Rio Apurimac - Santa Theresa Valley - Machu Picchu).
Ausengate Trek: (6 days, 5 nights)
Highest Altitude: 5165 meter
Difficult: moderate
Often forgotten but very beautiful trek around the Ausengate vulcano in the Cordillera Vilcanota.
Because of the distance to Cusco and very few visitors, villages are very much how they were centuries
ago. There is no electricity and most locals speak Quechua only.
(Tinqui - Japata - Laguna Jatan Pucacocha - Base Camp - Jampamayo Canyon - Laguna Comercocha )
